Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg / Pretoria
Welcome to South Africa, the country at the southern tip of the African continent. It is considered the most developed country in Africa and borders two oceans and six neighboring countries. South Africa has three capital cities: the administrative capital Pretoria, the parliamentary capital Cape Town, and the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein. The largest cities are Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The country has eleven official languages, including English, Afrikaans, and nine Bantu languages. It is often said that the whole world comes together in South Africa—and rightly so. Few countries combine deserts, endless dry savannas, bushland, rainforests, lagoons, wetlands, and mountain ranges in one place. Along more than 2,000 km of coastline, white sandy beaches stretch endlessly, while modern cities pulse with life. A remarkable diversity of wildlife and plant species thrives alongside people of many cultures and backgrounds.
Pick up your rental car at the airport and drive from Johannesburg to Pretoria (approx. 50 km / 40 minutes). On an optional city tour, you can explore the main sights of the administrative capital. Church Square, located in the historic city center, is an excellent starting point for sightseeing.
Day 2: Pretoria to Panorama Route
Today you travel towards the beautiful Panorama Route. Over the next few days, you will explore one of South Africa’s most scenic regions. Highlights not to be missed include Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Blyde River Canyon, Three Rondavels, Pilgrim’s Rest, God’s Window, several waterfalls such as Mac Mac and Lisbon Falls, and the Graskop Gorge Lift. There is plenty to see, and you will gather many unforgettable impressions.
Day 3: Panorama Route
The Panorama Route is one of South Africa’s most popular and spectacular destinations. It winds through the rugged landscapes of the Drakensberg Mountains in Mpumalanga Province, offering breathtaking views. The Highveld plateau drops steeply toward the Lowveld, revealing dramatic vistas nearly 1,000 meters below.
The most impressive section is the Blyde River Canyon, the third-largest canyon in the world and one of South Africa’s great natural wonders. Key viewpoints include the Three Rondavels, offering panoramic views of the 26 km long and 800 m deep canyon. Nearby, the Bourke’s Luck Potholes showcase striking rock formations sculpted by water over time. God’s Window is perhaps the most famous viewpoint, providing sweeping views into the Lowveld and the iconic Pinnacle rock formation—an enduring favorite among photographers.
Day 4: Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park lies in the Lowveld at approximately 250 meters above sea level. Several rivers flow through the park, forming gorges such as the Sabie River. The park features diverse landscapes and climate zones, from tropical grasslands to iconic baobab trees.
After arriving at your lodge, you will embark on your first safari. Keep an eye out for the Big Five and let yourself be captivated by the magic of Kruger National Park.
Day 5: Kruger National Park
Today is dedicated entirely to South Africa’s largest wildlife reserve, the world-famous Kruger National Park. Covering approximately 20,000 km², it was established in 1898 by President Paul Kruger as the “Sabi Game Reserve” and became a national park in 1926.
The park is home to around 150 mammal species and nearly 700 species of birds, reptiles, fish, and amphibians. Morning and afternoon game drives offer excellent opportunities to spot the Big Five and many other animals, including lions, leopards, elephants, and rhinos. Impalas are the most common large animal, with over 150,000 individuals, while giraffes and elephants are also frequently seen.
Day 6: Kruger National Park to Eswatini (Swaziland)
You leave South Africa today and cross the border into Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), a small kingdom known for its traditional African lifestyle and beautiful landscapes. Drive to your accommodation and explore the surroundings. Enjoy a nature walk or browse colorful curio markets, immersing yourself in local culture and perhaps finding souvenirs to take home.
Day 7: Eswatini (Swaziland)
Despite its small size, Eswatini offers much to discover. The country blends stunning natural scenery with rich traditions. Explore the Ezulwini Valley and the administrative capital Mbabane, which offers shopping and entertainment opportunities.
Manzini is the country’s industrial center, while nearby attractions include the Mantenga Falls and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. In the north lies Piggs Peak, named after French gold prospector William Pigg, where you can learn about the region’s gold-mining history.
Day 8: Eswatini to Hluhluwe
Today you return to South Africa and travel to the Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Wetland region. The national park consists of two connected sections: Hluhluwe in the north and iMfolozi in the south. The lush green landscape is especially renowned for its conservation efforts to protect the endangered white rhinoceros. After arrival, the rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 9: Hluhluwe
This day is dedicated to the diverse flora and fauna of Hluhluwe National Park. Enjoy a game drive and experience a fascinating variety of ecosystems. Rolling hills, open grasslands, savannas, and wetlands support a rich diversity of wildlife, including the Big Five and the world’s largest population of white rhinos.
Day 10: Hluhluwe to St. Lucia
Continue south to St. Lucia, located within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Subtropical climate, pristine beaches, hippos, and crocodiles make this area a popular holiday destination. The park covers approximately 300,000 hectares and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
After check-in, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Optional: a boat cruise on the St. Lucia Estuary, where you may spot hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species, topped off by a spectacular sunset.
Day 11: St. Lucia to Durban
Travel south along the coast to Durban, the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa’s third-largest city. Situated on the Indian Ocean, Durban is known for its beaches, harbor, and subtropical climate. After check-in, explore the city—highlights include the beachfront promenade known as the “Golden Mile.”
Day 12: Durban to Drakensberg Mountains
Today you travel to the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa’s second UNESCO World Heritage Site and the natural border with Lesotho. Stretching over 1,000 km, the region features lush mountain slopes, high plateaus, and peaks such as Thabana Ntlenyana (3,482 m), the highest mountain in Southern Africa. After arrival, take time to relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
Day 13: Drakensberg Mountains
Visit the Sani Pass, South Africa’s highest mountain pass at approximately 2,900 meters above sea level. The road is partly unpaved, making the journey adventurous yet safe, with spectacular views. At the summit, you’ll find Africa’s highest pub. The remainder of the day is at leisure.
Day 14: Departure from Johannesburg
Your South African journey comes to an end. We hope your luggage is filled with wonderful memories. Drive to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in time to return your rental car and check in for your onward or return flight. We wish you a pleasant journey home.
